Citra Citra Citra Triple IPA by Decadent Ales is a juicy hazy IPA that highlights the Citra hop. Orange and pineapple juice flavors stand up before getting run over by a bitter grapefruit finish. This article covers a review and relation to Mathew Barzal as a sports reference.

Brewery Background

Decadent Ales (DA) is located in Mamaroneck, New York and opened in 2018. Paul Pignataro is the founder and one of the owners of DA. DA focuses on IPAs and stouts to fill out their beer release portfolio. Portfolio currently stands at 315 beers, with 56% being IPAs, 19% being stouts, and the remaining 25% being sours, pilsners and porters. Signature IPAs have an artisanal ingredient or two added, typically fresh fruit and purees. Taproom is located twenty miles north of Citi Field, so I’m picturing New York Mets fans stopping by for a pint or two before or after a baseball game.

DA is active on Instagram with beer release updates and taproom activities. Hurricane Ida dumped over five feet of rain that entered the brewery and taproom in early September 2021, causing extensive damage. A timely Oktoberfest Fundraiser was held on 10/2/21 and a large group of beer geeks attended. Due to a hard working staff and the desire to serve the neighborhood tasty beer, DA reopened their taproom in mid October 2021. This clearly shows why New York City is one of the best cities in the world.

East Coast vs. West Coast Hazy IPAs

Due to Covid-19 impacting the craft beer industry in numerous ways during 2020-2021, some online retailers (Half Time Beverage and Craftshack) have added DA beers to their lineups. I was fortunate to find Citra Citra Citra Triple IPA at a small beer store, Beer Geeks, in Rockwall, TX. I’ve tried several east coast hazy IPAs to compare to the numerous west coast hazy IPAs I’ve had since 2016. DA is comparable to Reuben’s Brews based on juiciness and pure hop flavor.

Citra Citra Citra Triple IPA Background

Decadent Ales brews the following Citra beers:

  • IPA – 4.8% ABV, Untappd Rating 3.78
  • DIPA – 8.7% ABV, Untappd Rating 4.02
  • TIPA – 10.8% ABV, Untappd Rating 4.06

Citra IPA has had three different iterations brewed to date. I’m on a mission to find the DIPA version to see if the strong grapefruit notes have been dialed back from 11 to at least 10 or lower.

Sports Comparison for this Libation

Mathew Barzal, Center, for the New York Islanders. Barzal was selected #16 overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. Spent two full seasons in the Western Hockey League (WHL) as a member of the Seattle Thunderbirds during 2015-2016 and 2016-2017. Was the WHL Playoff MVP in 2017 by helping the Thunderbirds win the Ed Chynoweth Cup. Had a breakout season after being called up to the NHL level with the Islanders in 2017-2018, and won Rookie of the Year with 22 goals and 63 assists. Barzal is considered a tall and lanky center in today’s NHL due to being 6′-0″ tall and weighing 187 lbs. He’s big enough to move Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin out of the slot, but also fast enough to outskate Steven Stamkos and Auston Matthews.

Islanders have had back-to-back deep playoff runs in the 2020 and 2021 seasons, by reaching the Eastern Conference Finals. Tampa Bay beat New York in 6 games in 2020 and 7 games in 2021. Barzal raised his level of play during both playoff runs by scoring 5 goals and 12 assists in 2020, followed by 6 goals and 8 assists in 2021. Even though he might not be a true magician due to focusing on his hockey skills, Barzal has taken a huge step forward during the past two seasons.

16 Wins Equals the Stanley Cup

New York fan base is now leaning towards the Islanders instead of the Rangers due to their recent playoff runs. Just a matter of time before Barzal and his teammates make it to the Stanley Cup Finals, and not have a lingering bitterness due to unfinished business. Put the biscuit in the basket and light the lamp boys!
