Pro Football Top 2 Games to Watch
AFC Championship Game: Kansas City vs. Baltimore
Afternoon kickoff (3:00 PM EDT) from M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland on 1/28/24. Chiefs advanced to this game with a close 27-24 win over Buffalo in the AFC Divisional Round. Ravens are in this matchup due to a thorough 34-10 win over Houston in the AFC Divisional Round. These teams didn’t play each other during the 2023 NFL regular season. Kansas City leads the historical head-to-head series 7-5, which includes 1-0 in the playoffs.
Kansas City Chiefs Analysis
Chiefs are in the AFC Championship game for the sixth consecutive season and are trending up at the correct time. They’ll have to overcome the injury bug, due to ruling out G Joe Thuney and DT Derrick Nnadi. Four players are currently listed as questionable (RB Isiah Pacheco, LB Willie Gay, S Mike Edwards, WR Kadavius Toney). Need the RB corps to fill a sizeable gap if Pacheco is unable to go. QB Patrick Mahomes and TE Travis Kelce will continue to play pitch and catch up and down the field. Kansas City’s defensive unit will have to play error free football in order to head to Super Bowl 58.
Baltimore Ravens Analysis
Baltimore will continue to rely on dual threat QB Lamar Jackson to play with a chip on his shoulder. Three deep RB corps (Justice Hill, Gus Edwards, Dalvin Cook) will have to move the chains on a consistent basis. TE Mark Andrews will be welcomed back with open arms by his teammates and could be a difference maker in the red zone. Ravens defense continues to use physical play and sound tackling to cause game changing turnovers. Only allowing 213.0 yards and 10.0 points scored per game in the postseason. Mahomes leads Jackson 3-1 in head-to-head matchups, and they’ll keep their rivalry going in the biggest poker game of the season.
Prediction: Old fashioned field position game that will be decided by turnovers and special teams, with Kansas City finding a way to hold on by 4 points.
NFC Championship Game: Detroit vs. San Francisco
Detroit Lions Analysis
Two explosive offenses with situational defenses will meet up for the winner to head to Las Vegas and play the AFC Conference champion. Detroit is riding a 7-2 streak into this matchup and QB Jarred Goff is oozing confidence (564 passing yards, 3 TDs). Rookie RB Jahmyr Gibbs (99 rushing yards, 2 rushing TDs, 83 receiving yards) is now playing like a first round draft pick. Gibbs looks slimmer and faster off the line of scrimmage and has adapted quickly to the speed of the NFL. WR Amon-Ra St. Brown (187 receiving yards, 1 TD) has blossomed during this third season in Detroit and is officially the #1 WR on this cohesive squad. Can the defense find a way to hang with the up-tempo 49ers’ offense for sixty minutes?
San Francisco 49ers Analysis
San Franciso is playing in their third straight NFC Championship game. Received their late wakeup call in the NFC Divisional Round against Green Bay, using a 69-yard scoring drive that chewed up 5:11 of game clock. Defensive scheme was active in the fourth quarter by getting constant pressure on QB Jordan Love. RB Christian McCaffrey has plenty of gas in his tank to carry the running load. QB Brock Purdy will have his big play WR back, due to Deebo Samuel being cleared to play in this game. Watch Samuel closely since he’ll be nursing a hairline fracture in his left shoulder, which should limit his running plays. TE George Kittle is the catalyst for the 49ers offense, and he wants a rematch against Travis Kelce in Super Bowl 58.
