Enjoy By 07.04.21 DIPA by Stone Brewing is a big bold beer due to weighing in at 9.0% ABV. Stone Brewing typically brews hop bombs for their Enjoy By DIPAs and subsequently have a tendency to blend together flavor wise. The 07.04.21 version stands out as a solid fruit infused hazy with a unique finish. This article covers a review and relation to Fernando Tatis Jr. as a sports reference.

Beer Review Stone Brewing’s Enjoy By 07.04.21 DIPA Scoring Categories:

  • Can Design: action item will be completed early before the 7/4/21 deadline
  • Appearance: medium thickness orange haze 5/6
  • Aroma: full sweet tangerine up front, touch of pineapple on the back end 23/24
  • Flavor: tangerine transitions to strong orange notes, pineapple juice joins the holiday party in the middle, piney and hop burn finish, remarkably smooth for 9.0% ABV 38/40
  • Mouthfeel: sticky and good creaminess for a hazy 9/10
  • Overall Impression: fruity hazy DIPA that is full of orange and pineapple juice, with an almost perfect finish of lingering bitterness and piney sap notes that keeps you coming back for more 19/20
  • Total Score: 94/100
  • This DIPA stands out due to the fruit forward taste of pure tangerine and pinneapple juice, and then finishes with a flurry of hop bitterness and no alcohol burn. I’ve been waiting a long time for Stone Brewing to make a memorable hazy IPA and they have finally delivered with this batch.

Brewery Background

Stone Brewing is located in Escondido, California and opened in 1996. Founder Greg Koch focused on high hop content beers with gargoyles on their bottles. Stone Pale Ale was the first flagship beer and then everything changed when Arrogant Bastard Ale was released. That beer signaled the start of the San Diego craft beer market with Stone Brewing leading the charge. Stone Brewing is the largest brewery in Southern California and the ninth largest craft brewery in the United States based on annual production numbers in 2020.

As Covid restrictions are being relaxed, I strongly recommend making a trip to the Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens in Escondido, California. The hop aroma that greets customers when they walk in the door and proceed to the check in counter, is beyond olfactory description. The grounds are perfect for beer drinking and fine dining, with flexibility on making your own flights or focusing on the specialty beers on tap. Be careful in the merchandise shop, since all man caves need bar accessories, t-shirts, cycling jerseys and signage to pay homage to the San Diego beer scene. The 40 ounce growler hydro flask and Smoked Porter t-shirt I bought there in 2012 still get a ton of use.

There are a myriad of YouTube clips about Stone Brewing and Greg Koch. This clip still rings true with me every time I watch it. Mr. Koch has a business vision, plan and dream that he won’t waver from. Stone Brewing has helped paved the way for numerous micro-breweries to realize their dreams as well.

Enjoy By 07.04.21 DIPA Background

Stone Brewing started the Enjoy By IPA series in 2014 and they typically focus on the following calendar dates:

  • February 14th (Valentine’s Day)
  • April 20th
  • July 4th (Independence Day)
  • October 31st (Halloween)
  • December 25th (Christmas)
  • January 1st (New Year’s Day)

The Enjoy By IPAs are always a DIPA, with 90 IBUs and 9.4% ABV. Most batches focus on differing hop profiles, but subtle recipe changes have been used (tangerine, unfiltered, chocolate & coffee, etc.). The intent is to drink the beer on or before the expiration date shown on the bottle or can, to ensure the hops are fresh, your taste buds take a literal beating of bitterness and the enamel is peeled off your teeth.

Sports Comparison for this Libation

  • Fernando Tatis Jr., SS for the San Diego Padres. Padres will always be linked to their best historical player ever, the late Tony Gwynn. Gwynn was an absolute master at hitting the ball in all situations and his defensive play was underrated. Alesmith Brewing Company paid homage to Gwynn by making San Diego Pale Ale .394 which is a solid pale ale. After spending twenty plus seasons floundering between below average and sometimes decent, the Padres promoted Tatis Jr. to their MLB lineup in 2019 and he finished third in the National League Rookie of the Year Award. During the Covid shortened 2020 season, Tatis Jr. literally put the Padres on his back against the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Wild Card round by hitting two timely home runs. He was rewarded with a monster contract in 2021 (14 years for $340 million). Tatis Jr. is now the face of the Padres franchise at a stadium (Petco Park) where Stone Brewing beers are served at a quick clip. I’m excited for a once doormat franchise to push the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West over the next decade. Tatis Jr. is a five tool player that should produce eye-popping offensive statistics and will continue to show his teammates how to play error free defense. Stone Brewing and Tatis Jr. are both operating in top notch work environments, and they should continue to improve on a daily basis without compromising their core values. Cheers to both!
